What’s the point of doing strategic planning if the plan is not implemented?

It’s like the cartoon where the owner of a company has a dark bound book in his hand. The title of the book says Strategic Plan for ABC company. The owner then says to the executive team, “This strategic plan will be even easier NOT to implement, than the last one.” This characterizes the outcome of many failed plans of the past.

Ways organizations typically do strategic planning:

  • Creating the plan on their own. People may convince themselves of all sorts of stuff that simply may not be accurate or may result in a case of unintentional consequences.
  • Miss their blind spots. The adage, “You don’t know what you don’t know” is often applicable when it comes to strategic planning.
  • Create it solely with the board or executive team. Staff perspective and buy-in may suffer if they are excluded in the planning process.

The results may be a plan that is not an accurate representation of the company. In many situations one might say this is a plan to fail when confronted with the task of developing a strategic plan.

Let us facilitate the process of developing a strategic plan with you. We will guide you and your leadership team to articulate goals and identify metrics to measure progress. This interactive, engaging planning-process will result in a more productive culture able to meet known, and yet unknown challenges.

Our process is modular enabling us to help with just one or two aspects of the plan. Perhaps it’s core values or business model pricing structure – we will work with you on an ala carte basis as well as the soup to nuts complete plan.

How do you implement the plan?

We can stay engaged through the implementation of the plan. Together, we’ll develop a series of prioritized activities as an outcome of the planning process. We’ll help you coordinate and align your resources and actions with your mission, vision, and strategy. A well-managed process can transform a static plan into an actionable plan. This enables the strategic plan to evolve and grow as requirements and other circumstances change.
